Truffles ended a client call for me on Thursday. Not metaphorically. At 4:52 she stepped onto the keyboard, unmuted me mid-sentence into a conversation that had been over for twenty minutes, and then sat down on the trackpad and stared into the camera. The client laughed. We wrapped. She was right.
Nine months in, I have stopped pretending my apartment is an office. It is a coworking space with two very opinionated members and no conference room.
They have divided the labor cleanly. Truffles runs operations. She is on a fixed internal schedule, calibrated to dinner, and she begins enforcing it around a quarter to five regardless of what is on the screen. Barnaby runs wellbeing. He turns up when my shoulders are at my ears, puts eleven pounds on my forearm, and refuses to move until my typing slows down. Neither of them has ever asked for a status update.
I want to be clear that I tried the software first.
In April I downloaded four apps in one weekend. Time blocking, focus timers, a thing that shamed me with a weekly graph. All of them ended the same way. A notification arrived, I acknowledged it, I dismissed it, and I kept working through dinner and into the dark, which in a Portland December starts at 4:30.
Software asks. A nine pound cat does not ask, and that difference is the entire reason one of them works.
This is not really a cat post. It is the same lesson I keep relearning in brand work, delivered by an animal instead of by a quarterly review. A guideline nobody enforces is a suggestion. I have written voice principles that lived in a beautiful PDF and were violated within a week, not because anyone disagreed with them but because nothing in the system pushed back when they were ignored. The tone of voice deck did not sit on the trackpad.
The constraints that hold are the ones with a body behind them. A person who owns the call. A named approver. A hard stop that arrives whether or not you are finished. Everything else is a preference with good typography.
The constraints that hold are the ones with a body behind them.
It is raining, obviously. The string lights are up because December in this apartment needs help. In eleven minutes Truffles will begin her approach across the desk, Barnaby will claim the warm laptop vent, and this post will be finished whether or not I think it is done. That is the framework. I did not choose it.
