The NBA Found Out What Its Values Cost

A single tweet from a general manager put a dollar figure on the most progressive brand in American sports, and the league paid it.

I was at a bar off Hawthorne on Tuesday watching Blazers preseason, and nobody in the room was watching basketball. They were watching a crawl of statements about seven words a general manager in Houston had posted and then deleted.

By the weekend the league had issued a statement, then a second statement walking back the tone of the first, then a press conference explaining both. Chinese broadcasters dropped the games. Sponsors went quiet in the specific way sponsors go quiet. The most progressive brand in American sports spent a week looking for a sentence that would cost it nothing.

There was no such sentence.

A value you have never been billed for is not a value, it is a preference, and the invoice is the only thing that tells you which one you had.

Here is the part that gets lost. The NBA did not fake anything. For years it genuinely let players say what they wanted, and that openness was real equity, built in visible contrast to a football league that spent three seasons trying to make its own players smaller. Nobody invented that position in a workshop. It grew, it stayed consistent, and it was free.

Free is the load-bearing word there. Almost every value an American brand has adopted since 2016 has been tested only against domestic opinion, where the downside is a bad news cycle and the upside is a better one. Nike ran the Kaepernick ad and took two days of people burning shoes and then a quarter of record sales. Patagonia sued over Bears Ears and got a mailing list out of it. Those were not cheap. They were priced in dollars the brands had already agreed to spend.

China is a different currency. It is a huge share of the league's growth story, not its press coverage, and it does not negotiate over a deleted post. So the same organization that painted social justice language onto its own floor found the edge of the thing, and the edge sat somewhere between a principle and a broadcast contract.

What I tell clients, and I have told clients this in rooms where it was not welcome, is to do the arithmetic before the launch. Before a value goes into your brand platform, write down the number it would cost you to hold that value on your worst day. If you cannot name the number, you have not adopted a value. You have adopted a marketing asset, and marketing assets get written down the moment the market moves.

I walked home in the rain. Truffles was sitting on the stair I still have not fixed, holding no positions whatsoever. It is going great for her.
