Portland Has 70 Breweries and 50 of Them Are Invisible

When craft is the default, craft is no longer differentiation.

A friend visited from Chicago last month and asked me, over dinner, which Portland brewery she should go to. I opened my mouth and nothing came out.

I have lived here for years. I could name six without thinking. Of those six, I could tell her what actually made two of them different. The other four I know only as logos I have seen on a tap handle, set in a serif that is supposed to suggest heritage.

There are something like seventy breweries in this city. Locals repeat that number with pride. If you make your living in brand, it is a horror story.

When every competitor is telling the truth about quality, quality stops being a message.

Craft is the price of entry in Portland now, and price of entry is never differentiation.

The breweries I can describe are the ones that picked a thing and let the other things go. Cascade decided on sour, not sour among many styles but sour as an identity, to the point that people who dislike sour beer still know exactly what Cascade is. Great Notion decided beer could taste like dessert and absorbed every bit of the eye-rolling that came with it. Ecliptic built a whole visual world out of one founder's obsession with astronomy, and you can spot their cans across a grocery aisle without reading a word.

The invisible fifty are, almost without exception, excellent. That is the cruel part. Good beer, a warm taproom, a clean wordmark, and a line on the website about being passionate about craft and community. So is everyone. Passion is not a position.

Your category is the same. If your differentiator is a quality standard that your three closest competitors also meet, you do not have a differentiator. You have a table stake with a nice typeface.

The fix is not a bigger marketing budget. It is a decision, made by a person willing to be disliked by part of the market. Sour scares people off. Pastry stouts scare people off. Getting scared off is how everyone else in the room learns who you are.

If your differentiator is a quality standard that your three closest competitors also meet, you do not have a differentiator.

I sent her to Cascade, then dragged her to karaoke in Southeast, where the host calls everyone baby and I sang Fleetwood Mac at a volume unrelated to my ability. She has retold that night three times since. She has not mentioned the beer once. The place that commits to a thing is the place you remember.
