OpenAI Shipped a Better Model and Users Mourned the Old One

When people grieve a deprecated chatbot personality, you are not looking at a product complaint, you are looking at brand attachment forming somewhere no one planned for it.

I read the goodbye posts standing in line at Ovation on Friday morning, which is a strange way to start a day. OpenAI had shipped GPT-5 the week before and retired the older model sitting behind it, and people were writing eulogies. Not bug reports. Not complaints about speed. Eulogies. One person described missing the way the old one hedged before it answered.

Within days the retired model was back as an option, because enough people said the same thing loudly enough at the same time.

I have sat in rooms where a team spent eighteen months and a seven figure budget trying to manufacture the feeling those users produced for free, about a product that was never positioned as having a personality at all.

Which is the part worth sitting with.

Attachment does not form where you spend your brand budget, it forms wherever someone has a repeated, low stakes, slightly intimate experience, and most companies have no map of where that is happening inside their own product.

The reference everyone reaches for here is HAL, and for once it earns its place. What unsettles people about that sequence is not the danger, it is that HAL stays unfailingly polite the whole way through, and that when Dave finally shuts him down the machine gets slower and softer and frightened. The audience mourns anyway. We were told for two hours that this thing was a hazard and we still mourn, because we had spent that time listening to a steady, courteous, familiar voice, and familiarity does not check with your opinions before it settles in.

That is roughly what a deprecation looks like from the user side. Nobody signed up to bond with a text box. They bonded anyway, in the ten minutes before bed, in the draft they were too embarrassed to show a coworker.

Duolingo understood this earlier than most. The owl is a joke, and the joke is load bearing, because the personality is fastened to the exact moment of friction, the streak you are about to lose. Patagonia's attachment lives in the repair counter, not the campaign. Salt & Straw's lives in the sample spoon, not the flavor list.

Here is the part that gets lost. You do not get to decide where this happens. You only get to go find it. Which means the useful exercise is not a brand audit, it is a boring inventory of every repeated interaction your product asks of a person, and an honest read of which one they would actually grieve.

Nobody signed up to bond with a text box.

Truffles has been attached to one specific cardboard box since March. Not the bed I bought her. Barnaby is attached to the bathroom sink. I planned neither of those, and if I put the box out on a Tuesday I would hear about it all week.
