Los Angeles Is Burning and Your Posts Are Still Scheduled

A content calendar is an automated statement of priorities, and disaster weeks are when everyone finds out what yours actually says.

Tuesday morning I was reading fire coverage on my phone. Palisades still burning, Eaton still burning, a friend in Altadena posting one photo of her street that I have not been able to stop looking at. Wedged between two of those posts, a national retailer served me a four-slide carousel about cozy winter layering. There was a little sparkle transition on slide three.

Nobody at that company woke up Tuesday and decided to publish that. Somebody decided it in November, in a spreadsheet, in a row marked Q1 evergreen, and then went home for the holidays.

Which is exactly the point.

A content calendar is not a neutral piece of production hygiene. It is a standing instruction that says: unless a human intervenes, this goes out. Most weeks the instruction is invisible, because most weeks nothing is happening. Then a week like this one arrives and the instruction becomes a public statement, published under your logo, about what you were paying attention to and what you were not.

Your scheduling tool is not making the decision for you. It is executing a decision you already made, which was the decision not to look.

I have watched this from inside brand strategy rooms and the failure is almost never callousness. It is ownership. The calendar belongs to a coordinator two levels down who does not have the authority to pause it, and the person who has that authority has never once opened the tool. So the queue wins. Three fixes, none of them complicated.

One, somebody senior holds standing authority to pause everything, with no approval chain and no meeting. Two, that person has to actually see what is scheduled, which means a shared view rather than a login nobody senior has ever used. Three, define in advance what pausing means. Full stop, or promotional only, or promotional plus anything carrying fire, heat, or home imagery. Deciding that at six in the morning is how you get the bad version.

And pausing is usually the whole job. The brands I watched handle this week well mostly went quiet, gave money, said exactly where, and got out of the way. The ones getting dragged are the ones that tried to convert a disaster into content. Nobody in Altadena needs your statement of solidarity. They need the mutual aid link and then your silence.

A content calendar is not a neutral piece of production hygiene.

I got home Tuesday and Truffles was asleep on the router, which is her spot, and Barnaby wanted dinner at the exact minute he always wants dinner. There is something clarifying about animals with no Q1 plan. Before you look at anything else this week, go look at your queue.
