Gen Alpha Are Not Mini Millennials (And Your Brand Is Not Ready)

My friend's eight-year-old told me last week that she doesn't want a phone because "phones are for old people." She wants an AI companion. She's eight. And she already thinks smartphones are legacy technology.

Welcome to Gen Alpha. They're hitting cultural relevance faster than any generation before them, and most brands are preparing for them by... applying Gen Z playbooks with younger actors. That's not going to work.

When the Fyre Festival documentary revealed that models were paid $250,000 each for a single Instagram post, it quantified something we already suspected: the influencer economy had decoupled completely from value creation.

Here's what I'm observing about this cohort that should make every brand strategist sit up straight. First: they have never known a world without AI. By the time they're making purchasing decisions, AI agents will be as normal as Google is to us. They won't think of AI as a tool. They'll think of it as an environment. Their relationship to technology is not "user and device." It's ambient and continuous.

Here's what I'm observing about this cohort that should make every brand strategist sit up straight.

Second: their parents are millennials who grew up on the internet and are deeply anxious about it. This means Gen Alpha is being raised with more digital guardrails than any previous generation. The result is a cohort that is simultaneously more tech-native than anyone and more supervised than anyone. That tension will define their consumer behavior in ways we can't fully predict yet.

Third: their cultural references are not linear. They're not going through the same media funnel. A Gen Alpha kid's cultural diet might include Roblox, obscure YouTube channels, their parent's Netflix queue, and AI-generated content that didn't exist yesterday. There's no monoculture to target. There's no single platform to dominate.

Fourth, and this is the one that gets me: they're the first generation being raised by parents who are genuinely worried about authenticity online. Millennials experienced the damage of performative social media firsthand. Many are actively trying to raise kids who value genuine connection over digital performance. If that sticks, Gen Alpha might be the first generation to actively reject the influencer model that has defined marketing for a decade.

I don't have a neat strategic framework for brands targeting Gen Alpha yet. Nobody does, and anyone selling you one is lying. But I do know this: whatever worked for Gen Z will not work here. The gap between these generations is not a gap of degree. It's a gap of kind.

Start watching. Start listening. And for the love of everything, stop making ads that are just TikTok trends with younger kids in them.
