Saturday night, the sticky-floored place in Southeast Portland, and the host who calls everyone baby put me up with Toxic. I have no business singing Toxic. I sang it anyway, badly, with total commitment, and the whole bar took the chorus away from me like they had been waiting all week for the chance.
They had. Four days earlier a judge in Los Angeles ended the conservatorship.
The room was loud in a way karaoke rooms usually are not. Not nostalgia. Something closer to a scoreboard.
I have spent my career in rooms trying to manufacture exactly that feeling, and I want to be honest about how rarely we get anywhere near it.
Thirteen years, no budget, no agency of record, no media plan, one hashtag, and it moved a court, while your fully integrated campaign moved a dashboard.
It is worth being precise about what that movement had, because the lesson is not simply that people care about things.
It had stakes with a body attached. Not a brand value, not a purpose platform, a specific person whose specific life was the subject of the argument. Consequence is the raw material every campaign brief asks for and almost none of them can honestly supply.
It had no owner. Fan accounts, message board archivists, podcast hosts, court reporters, and a documentary that arrived years into the work rather than starting it. Nobody approved the assets. Nobody could, which meant nobody could water them down either.
It had one unambiguous ask, two words long, a verb and a name. Compare that to the purpose line your team spent six weeks and one offsite arriving at, the one with two conjunctions in it, the one nobody in the building can repeat without opening the deck.
Here is the uncomfortable part for people who do what I do. There was no way to buy into this, and the brands that tried were correctly ignored. A hashtag posted from a corporate account the morning after a ruling is not solidarity, it is scavenging, and everyone watching can tell the difference instantly.
It had one unambiguous ask, two words long, a verb and a name.
What I take from it is smaller and harder than a case study. Clarity of ask beats volume of spend. Stakes cannot be simulated, only found. And if your message needs a legend to be understood, the people you are counting on to carry it will quietly put it down.
The host gave me one more song and I did not push my luck with a second Britney. I got home at one in the morning to find my notebook on the floor and Truffles sitting where it had been, entirely unbothered, having filed the only editorial note that mattered.
