Barbenheimer Was Not a Marketing Plan and That Is Why It Worked

The best campaign of the summer was invented by strangers on the internet and neither studio could have bought it.

I saw both. Barbie at the Bagdad in the early afternoon, then a long walk to reset my face, then Oppenheimer downtown at six. By the time I came out my ears were ringing and I had opinions about production design that I am not qualified to have. Half the lobby was in pink. A man in a full three piece suit bought popcorn next to a woman in pink cowboy boots and neither of them found the other one strange.

Nobody planned that.

That is the part the trade coverage has spent this week working around. The double feature was not a campaign. It was a joke that strangers started months ago about two films opening on the same Friday, and then enough people repeated the joke that it became a plan, and then enough people ran the plan that it became a record weekend.

The best marketing of the summer was made by the audience, for free, and neither studio could have bought it at any price.

Warner Bros spent enormously on Barbie and spent it well. The pink went everywhere. The Dreamhouse listing, the Xbox controller, the Gap collection, the shoes. Universal did close to the opposite for Oppenheimer, an austere three hour drama sold on film stock and IMAX and a director who talks about aspect ratios. Both of those worked. Neither of them explains the lobby I stood in.

Here is what separated this from a normal big weekend. Not reach. Contrast. Two products so opposed in tone that setting them side by side produced a third thing that belonged to neither owner. The meme did the one job a media plan cannot do. It gave people a part to play. You did not just buy a ticket. You picked an order, you picked an outfit, you took a position on which one goes first.

Brands keep trying to manufacture that and it keeps coming out damp. You cannot brief a collision. What you can do is be legible enough, and confident enough in one direction, that when somebody wants to build something out of you the pieces are actually there to build with. Barbie was pink all the way down. Oppenheimer was grey all the way down. Vagueness has never once gone viral.

The other smart thing both studios did was nothing. The accounts played along, the filmmakers answered the double feature question like good sports, and nobody sent a letter to a fan account. I have watched the failure mode from inside the room. Somebody says we should own this. Legal gets involved. It dies by Wednesday.

You cannot brief a collision.

I got home near midnight with two ticket stubs. Truffles was asleep on the tote bag. Barnaby knocked the stubs off the counter. No cultural moment occurred in my apartment. The city had one anyway, and no one approved it.
